MR in the diagnosis of colloid cysts of the third ventricle.

چکیده
Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, benign lesions that originate in the primitive neuroepithelium, which forms the roof plate of the tela choroidea [1-4] . Clinical presentation varies, symptoms being related to acute or chronic hydrocephalus. Intermittent headaches, gait disturbances, ataxia, fainting spells, mental disorders, and personality changes are encountered, alone or in combination . Radiologic diagnosispreviously based on the typical pneumoencephalographic appearance of dilated lateral ventricles due to a smooth, round mass projecting in the region of the foramina of Monro-has become easier with CT. In all reported series, the characteristic finding is the high density of almost all the cysts, which appear as well defined, homogeneously hyperdense, nonenhancing lesions in the region of the foramina of Monro. Nonetheless, a few cases of isodense or ring-enhancing lesions have been described [5-9J. Atomic emission spectrometry of the mucinous content of a third-ventricular colloid cyst [10] detected principally sodium, calcium, and magnesium with the mucin ; trace amounts

Endoscopic Treatment of Colloid Cysts of Third Ventricle: Study of Three Cases
Introduction: Colloid cyst of the third ventricle is a rare intracranial benign tumor. Traditionally, treatment is carried out by transcallosal or transcortical transventricular approach. Currently, the endoscopic treatment of these lesions is increasingly used. We reported our preliminary experience about three cases of colloid cysts treated by neuroendoscopy. Methods and Patients: We condu...
متن کاملMR and CT of masses of the anterosuperior third ventricle.
Six patients with masses of the anterosuperior portion of the third ventricle were imaged with MR and CT. Four patients had proved colloid cysts, one patient had a proved astrocytoma, and one patient had a presumed colloid cyst. Multiplanar MR imaging provided accurate localization of the anterosuperior third-ventricle mass in all cases. The MR intensity characteristics of the colloid cysts var...
متن کاملColloid cyst of the third ventricle: sometimes more conspicuous on CT than MR.
We present two cases of surgically proved colloid cysts that were more apparent on CT scans than on MR images. These cysts, while hyperdense on CT scans, were nearly isointense with brain on multiple MR sequences. This relative lack of visibility represents a potential pitfall when imaging a patient with headache.
متن کاملColloid cysts of the third ventricle: are MR imaging patterns predictive of difficulty with percutaneous treatment?
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare benign brain tumors. The purpose of this study was to correlate their patterns on MR images with the probability of success of percutaneous treatment. METHODS Nineteen patients underwent endoscopic treatment for colloid cysts of the third ventricle. The cases were divided into two groups based on difficulty of the aspiration...
متن کاملColloid cyst of the third ventricle: imaging-pathologic correlation.
Colloid cysts are relatively rare intracranial lesions located in the rostral aspect of the third ventricle. They may produce acute hydrocephalus, brain herniation, and lead to death. Although the clinical and imaging features of colloid cysts are well known, their etiology and the factors responsible for their imaging features continue to be a subject of debate. We present the imaging-patholog...
